Gamespot Reviews: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (VC)

A Link to the Past is still great, and it hasn't been rereleased to death like some of Nintendo's other games, making it a great choice for Virtual Console fans.

The Good: A fantastic adventure, faithfully emulated; still holds up as a quality product, with charming graphics and sound.

I should be purchasing this soon. Link to the Review can be found here.

IGN Reviews: Open Season (Wii)

As a children’s title that’s meant to compliment the theatrical release of Open Season, the game fulfills its mission of snagging shelf space, while still managing to throw in some entertaining moments into the mix. The comedy, while basic, actually had us laughing a few times through the game, and even though the story and character designs from the film are amazingly cookie-cutter, the game offers a few high points for anyone with little tikes in desperate need of some gaming goodness to go with the afternoon flick. Still, the game doesn’t have the polish necessary to really recommend it to anyone aside from Open Season fanatics, and we’d still stand by a rental as opposed to dropping full price for the game, especially when considering the Wii version, as all other console copies are dropping in price already. With a few multiplayer events and some decent gameplay mechanics, the game should last a younger player anywhere from 10-15 hours. Just don’t expect too much more than the single player adventure.

IGN and Gamespot Review: Mario Kart 64 (VC)

IGN
Mario Kart 64 arrived in America almost exactly 10 years ago, and the fans found it immediately. The game was a phenomenal sales success for Nintendo, selling over a million copies in just its first two months on the market, and paving the way for more great multiplayer games (like GoldenEye) to come later that same year. If you never owned an original Kart cartridge, consider this download. But if you've still got the old N64, four dust-covered controllers and the game itself sitting in a closet somewhere, do some digging. This re-release comes close to capturing the full spirit of the original version, but playing it old-school remains superior.

Gamespot

Mario Kart 64 may hold nostalgic value for some, but if you've spent any time with the more recent entries in the series, you'll find this version difficult to go back to.

Diddy Kong Racing Online Hands-on

A portion of IGN's article:

Lag and dropped connections hasn't been much of an issue, but again -- we're playing Diddy Kong Racing a week before it ships. Once people start buying the game next week all that can (and will) change. And we're also playing against people we trust...we haven't experienced bastards who love to drop out of a race mid-session because they're losing, so we haven't seen how Rare handles this in-game. We did test out dropping out in the middle of a connection ourselves, and it seems that the game will continue if there's still at least two players connected. Good to know.

IGN Reviews: Contra III (VC)

Contra III proves that priorities have shifted in the industry over the past 15 years – for a new title to ship with only six levels today would be laughable. But the six levels that are here are jam-packed, focused and a lot of fun, especially when played together with a friend. They're also tough as nails, especially on the more extreme difficulty settings, so getting through to the end may take a lot of trial, error and repetition of the same half-dozen stages. If you don't mind a shorter shooter and aren't frustrated by a true challenge, cash in your Wii Points – 800 will get you a ticket to a war-torn tomorrow. (But not 30 lives when you get there.)

Mortal Kombat Heading to DS

First Wii, now DS. In an event held in Las Vegas, Midway announced that they will be releasing a Mortal Kombat game on Nintendo's handheld, the DS. Nothing it known about the title, but hopefully we can expect it to be an original title, unlike the port coming to the Wii in the near future.

Also, Midway announced that if the Virtual Console continues to gain popularity, they might consider releasing the Mortal Kombat games that were released on Nintendo platforms way back then.

Midway continues to show ongoing support on the Nintendo systems. Let's hope it stays this way.

IGN Reviews: F-Zero and Sonic the Hedgehog (VC)

F-Zero

This game is all we American gamers ever got of F-Zero on the Super NES, though a 16-bit sequel was in development at one point and ultimately became part of the Japan-only Satellaview broadcast network. It would be great to see that unreleased-in-the-States follow-up, which was called BS F-Zero Grand Prix, finally debut on domestic shores. So show some love, racing fans, and support this release – let Nintendo know there's an audience, and maybe some previously unseen gems will eventually turn up.

Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog is a wonderful classic game to have holding down a spot in your Wii's array of channels. The only thing that should hold you back is your own personal history with the title – you may be one of the millions who've already played this game to death over the years, or you may already own it in another form. This Sonic has made encore appearances in Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube, Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the PS2 and Xbox, Sega Genesis Collection on the PS2 ... the list goes on and on. So check your last-gen library, check your sense of nostalgia, check to make sure you don't still have your old Genesis hooked up to AV port 3, collecting dust behind your entertainment center, and then feel free to jump back in. It's still fun to run in Sonic's shoes, even after 16 years.

Wii gets Scarface (port)

Wii has gotten yet another big name title, Scarface. Even though it's a port, it's nice to see that the Wii is getting increasing support. Here are some exerts from the magazine who gave us this news:

Shooting – a key part in most missions – is mapped on to the remote pointer, with players able to direct the aiming reticule around the screen, leaving a trail of Miami dead in its path. Moving your hand to direct Tony’s gun while your body remains still captures Montana’s steadfast mentality perfectly, that stubborn determination to stand his ground – an anchor with an AK."

"The famous filmic image is of Tony standing in his office doorway, legs wide open, determinedly bolted to the floor with his “little friend” the M16 held firmly in his hands. On the Wii, players will be able to adopt this pose, spraying bullets as one with Montana – gaming and filmic iconography merged into one."

"And what would Scarface be without that very implement that left said face scarred in the first place? If Resident Evil 4’s bag-wearing chainsaw jugglers got your gore-loving synapses firing, wait until you rev Scarface’s flesh munching baby into action. Chainsaw waving is directed with the remote, lopping heads clean off with a high swipe, or using more choppy motions to re-enact everyone’s favourite Monty Python and the Holy Grail Black Knight arm-putation moment. To add a cherry to the viscera flavoured cake, the remote speaker will even growl like a saw so as not to bring you out of the moment. Lovely."

This game's artistic aspects are amazing. Why do we need 3D games when we can have 2D games like this?
